The Ultimate 3-D Flick? | Monsters vs Aliens News

Monsters vs. Aliens will be Dreamwork Animation SKG's first release filmed entirely from start to finish in what the studio likes to refer to as "Ultimate 3-D," to differentiate itself from the 3-D experience we all come to love and hate…you know the one requires the audience to don those often ill fitting, silly looking glasses. According to the studio's animation chief, Jeffrey Katzenberg, on location for the ShoWest convention in Las Vegas, quote, ""This isn't our father's 3-D." Though it still relies on funny glasses, "the digital projection puts a perfect image on the screen. There is no ghosting, no eye strain or nausea."
Others studio released expected to jump on the band wagon include Disney's A Christmas Carol (November 2009) and 20th Century Fox's Ice Age 3 (2009), as well as Pixar's Toy Story 3 (2010)
Initial plans calling for the release of Monsters vs. Aliens on the same date of 20th Century Fox's much anticipated 3-D science fiction thriller Avatar, directed by James Cameron, had to be scrapped due to the anticipated scarcity of theaters with digital 3-D capability. According to many ShoWest sources, the national theaters chains won't have the capacity to show both 3-D films simultaneously on the requested number of screens befitting a blockbuster. From over 700 hundreds 3-D capable screens today, theatre owners are expect to boost these numbers to over 5,000 when both films debut in early 2009. The problem is that both studios want all of the available screens for themselves. Katzenberg has repeatly told industry insiders that that studio would need at least 6,000 screens for Monsters vs. Aliens alone. Obviously, if that is the case, the number can't add up. Stay tuned for more Monsters vs. Aliens 3-D news and developments heading your way soon.
